Patanjali Spirulina Review | Benefits and Side effects

Spirulina-The superfood of the century. Spirulina is a blue-green alga that got popular after it was successfully used by NASA as dietary supplements for astronauts. Spirulina was used by Aztec civilisation as a food in the 16th century. With ever-increasing popularity and demand of this food in the Indian people, Many Indian and foreign companies have launched spirulina tablets in the Indian market. Like all other food products, Baba Ramdev's Patanjali offers the most competitive price for spirulina.

Patanjali is offering spirulina with amla, ashwagandha and moringa with very little information on the website about the product. I believe it is important to research before introducing any kind of supplement and food in your lifestyle. In this Patanjali spirulina review, I m going to list down some benefits and side effects of the product and also discuss some important aspects that should be considered before taking this supplement.

Patanjali Spirulina Review

Patanjali Spirulina Review | Nutritional value

Spirulina is the most protein-dense plant food on the planet with 60% of protein. Now before you get overwhelmed with this, understand the daily intake recommended is not more than 10grams/day so you can have only 6 grams of protein from it. Apart from being high in protein, Spirulina is extremely high in minerals like iron, calcium, manganese, magnesium and potassium and high in vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5 and Vitamin K.

Patanjali Spirulina Review | Benefits

There is not much mentioned about the benefits of the products on the website. Spirulina has many scientifically proven benefits. It is known to help in various conditions. Below is the list of benefits of spirulina

  • High in Anti-oxidants
  • Anti-inflammatory properties
  • Lowers bad cholesterol level
  • Anti-cancer properties
  • Reduce blood pressure
  • Helps in Anemia
  • Blood sugar regulation

Patanjali Spirulina Review | Side Effects

This is the biggest problem I feel with the companies. If you check the website, no side effects are mentioned. It should be the responsibility of the company to tell every side effects of the product. Consumption of spirulina may lead to adverse side effects such as nausea, headaches, muscle pain, sweating and insomnia.

Patanjali Spirulina Review | Who should not take it

This is very irresponsible on the part of the company, there are certain conditions in which one should completely avoid taking spirulina. If you have the following conditions, you should avoid using the product at all cost

  • Autoimmune disorder
  • Allergic to seaweed or seafood
  • Gout
  • Kidney stone
  • Pregnant or nursing

Patanjali Spirulina Review | Safety Concerns

Spirulina is known to absorb pollutants,  heavy metals and toxins from water which can cause serious damage to the liver and other health issues.  There is not much known from where Patanjali outsource the raw material of the product. This can raise some safety concerns

Patanjali Spirulina Review | Dosage

On the website, the recommended dosage of the product is 1-2 capsules but in my opinion, it should be your best interest to consult a doctor for the dosage. Also, there is no doctors recommendation on the website for the product. This raises another concern of safety for the product.

Spirulina is the most nutrient-dense food on our planet. Patanjali is offering the product at the cheapest price. This could be a very useful supplement for many of you but you should always be cautious before taking any supplement. At the end of all, I would recommend that you should always consult a doctor before starting any herb, medicine or supplement in your diet for safety.

  2. Can some independent agency do test of Patanjali spirulina to assess its quality? To check if it has any contamination in the form of heavy metals etc. Also test spirulina from other Indian brands and provide the lab test results.
